Manuka Honey Health Benefits
Nail fungus is also called Onychomycosis. The most common types of fungi that cause nail fungus are dermatopytes or yeast.
Fungi are microorganisms that grow in dark and moist areas. A fungus is a parasitic organism like mold or mildew and they all thrive in dark areas. Toes are most exposed to being affected by nail fungus.
Usually the fungus enters under the nail bed or through a cut around the nail.
The nail affected by a fungus will start to get discolored, thick and sometimes bridle if left untreated.
About 3-4 % of Americans suffers from nail fungus. Usually adults are affected more than children unless one of the parents is infected. |

Nail fungus is contagious and can be transmitted in saunas, gyms, locker rooms, even by walking barefoot on a surface exposed to fungus.
Because it is contagious, when one member of a family is infected many times the entire family can be prone to infection just by living in the same environment.

Treatment of nail fungus is very important. If left untreated it could become painful and could spread to the other nails. Usually treatment lasts for a long time and it does not always provide relief.
It is very difficult to cure nail fungus permanently that is why prevention is very important. One of the best ways to prevent nail fungus is to avoid walking barefoot in public area and not using a nail clipper or file used by a person with a nail fungus infection.
A week immune system could create an environment for a fungus infection. It is very important to maintain a strong immune system and to follow a few easy rules like not cutting our nails too short, avoid cuts and nail biting. Also, always wear slippers around pools, public showers and keep your feet as dry as possible by changing socks often.
It is recommended to seek medical advice. Prescription medication is usually suggested. Unfortunately there is evidence that some of the medication prescribed for nail fungus cases could cause congestive heart failure and liver failure. |
