Infected Wounds

Scientific research shows that Active UMF (MGO) Manuka Honey provides a germ-free, moist environment that is suitable to naturally healing many infected wounds like: skin ulcers, diabetic ulcers, boils, pressure sores etc.

A clinical study was conducted in1999-2000 at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, New Zealand using UMF® Manuka Honey on unresponsive skin ulcers and chronic infected wounds.

It is known that UMF (MGO) Manuka Honey provides a moist healing environment. Clinical trials have produced several results with regard to the effect of UMF (MGO) Manuka Honey on infected wounds:

  • A moist environment accelerates the healing process
  • A body's natural attempt to heal itself is to gather serum around any infected wound. The serum dries and turns into a scab. A scab turns into a scar. The presence of UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey provides a moist healing environment that prevents the formation of scabs and in turn less scarring occurs.
  • The permanently moist environment provided by UMF®(MGO™)) Manuka Honey also makes healing less painful. A gauze applied on an infected wound treated with UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey does not dry out. This makes the removal of the dressing very easy, less painful and does not tear the new skin tissue that tries to form.
  • The moist environment provided by the UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey kills the bacteria that causes the infection in the wound and nourishes new growing tissue.

The active ingredient of UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey

All honey has some antibacterial properties due to the Hydrogen peroxide that is found in it. Hydrogen Peroxide is a naturally occurring component that is released by honey in contact with the infected wound.
Hydrogen Peroxide has antiseptic properties but its potency varies with several factors:

  • Some flower nectar contains a catalase which breaks down Hydrogen Peroxide.
  • The glucose oxidase that produces Hydrogen Peroxide is not stable in contact with heat, sunlight or contact with body fluids.
  • When used on an infected wound, the enzyme present in body tissue destroys Hydrogen Peroxide, reducing honey’s antiseptic properties.
skin ulcer UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey is stable and effective on healing infected wounds.

Studies have proved that in addition to Hydrogen Peroxide UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey contains an ingredient with higher antibacterial properties called Methylglyoxal. This ingredient was tested and scientific results have been gathered.
Some of the scientific tests results are:
Skin Ulcer

  • MGO™ is a very stable component and can not be destroyed easily.
  • The enzyme catalase present in body fluids does not affect MGO™. This catalase is known to destroy the antiseptic properties of hydrogen peroxide.
  • MGO™ is more effective that Hydrogen peroxide in combating most types of bacteria found in infected wounds.
  • MGO™ and Hydrogen Peroxide are both found in UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey. The combination of the two ingredients makes UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey a more potent antibacterial, antiseptic and antiviral product.

UMF (MGO) Manuka Honey can heal infected wounds.

Recently, medicine has been confronted by a surging number of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Most common antibiotics have proven to be inefficient in treating wounds infected with strains of bacteria like MRSA (Staphylococcus Aureus), Pseudomonas Aeruginosa etc. The benefit of using UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey on infected wounds is that this type of honey has both hydrogen peroxide and Methylglyoxal, which together are believed to work in an effective way to kill drug resistant bacteria that cause wound infections.
How does UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey works to combat drug resistant bacteria?

  • The active component in UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey, Methylglyoxal can penetrate deep tissue and is able to reach deeper seated infections.
  • UMF®(MGO™)) Manuka Honey keeps the wound moist and prevents the gauze to stick to the wound and cause tissue damage.
  • The moist property of UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey help the wound heal faster and provides vitamins, nutrients and amino acids to tissue.
  • UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey promotes tissue regeneration and reduces scarring.
  • UMF®(MGO™) Manuka Honey helps clean the infected wound by lifting any dirt and malodor out of the wound .
