What causes acne?
The main factor that causes acne is the dead skin that mixes with excess oil and blocks the hair follicles in the skin.
Propionibacterium acnes is a bacteria that lives on the surface of the skin. This bacterium is known to be one of the main reasons for acne. A bacterium brings white blood cells to the skin surface. The white blood cells produce an enzyme that destroys the surface of the follicle allowing the bacteria to enter the skin layer causing inflammation of the skin.
A surge in a hormonal activity is also known to be a cause for acne especially in male teens. The male hormones, androgens cause sebaceous glands to expand and increase oil production, which in turn will feed the bacteria on the skin.
Ways to treat acne
As with any bacterial affections, acne can be treated with prescription antibiotics topical and or oral. One of the most prescribed medications for acne is tetracycline.
The use of any antibiotics, especially in teens can reduce the level of good bacteria in the system and in turn can lower the immune system.
