ACNE AND ROSACEA

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that manifests on oily areas of the skin, primarily on the face, back and chest and affects mostly teenagers and young adults. Almost 8 in ten teenagers are affected by acne. If left untreated acne can cause severe scarring and psychological distress and depression.

What causes acne?

The main factor that causes acne is the dead skin that mixes with excess oil and blocks the hair follicles in the skin.

Propionibacterium acnes is a bacteria that lives on the surface of the skin. This bacterium is known to be one of the main reasons for acne. A bacterium brings white blood cells to the skin surface. The white blood cells produce an enzyme that destroys the surface of the follicle allowing the bacteria to enter the skin layer causing inflammation of the skin.

A surge in a hormonal activity is also known to be a cause for acne especially in male teens. The male hormones, androgens cause sebaceous glands to expand and increase oil production, which in turn will feed the bacteria on the skin.

Ways to treat acne

As with any bacterial affections, acne can be treated with prescription antibiotics topical and or oral. One of the most prescribed medications for acne is tetracycline.
The use of any antibiotics, especially in teens can reduce the level of good bacteria in the system and in turn can lower the immune system.

Acne and Manuka Honey.

Active UMF Manuka Honey 20+ is know to have antibiotic and antiseptic properties due to the hydrogen peroxide found in all honey and a non-hydrogen peroxide component with stronger healing qualities. This component called UMF was recently discovered to be Methylglyoxal.

Methylglyoxal is known to kill all kinds of bacteria and unlike hydrogen peroxide it does not loose it’s antiseptic properties when in contact with bodily fluids.

Internal use:

Active UMF 20+ Manuka Honey can be administered orally, 2-3 teaspoons per day, ½ hour before every mea.

External use:

Manuka Honey UMF 20+ can be administered topical by applying small amounts directly on the cleaned affected areas of the skin.  Allow at least ½ hour of exposure to the Active UMF Manuka Honey increasing the time as tolerated.
Repeat treatment 2-3 times a day.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea appears mostly on the face, neck, chest, ears and back and it is considered a chronic skin condition. Rosacea causes skin swelling and redness.
Left untreated rosacea can develop into what is called rhinophyma which manifests by the appearance of blood vessels on the skin surface and a bumpy and swollen tissue.

Rosacea is common mostly in adults and there is an estimated 12-15 million Americans affected by it. People with fair skin are most prone to be affected by rosacea.

rosacea

What causes rosacea ?

There are no known causes of rosacea but there are known factors that worsen the condition. Some of these factors are: Alcohol consumption, spicy foods, greasy foods, stress and the presence of h.pylori bacterium in the system.

One of the conditions associated with the presence of rosacea is Hypochlorhydria which is low stomach acid caused by stress or the presence of h.pylori.

Rosacea treatment

Prescription medication is known only to treat the symptoms of rosacea and not the disease. To treat the actual disease one will need to focus on the cause of the condition and effect a change in either diet or life style. This will mean to treat rosacea from the inside.

Rosacea and Manuka Honey

Active UMF Manuka Honey 20+ could help increase the level of good bacteria in the stomach and help fight the presence of h.pylori. In addition Manuka honey will help regulate the level of acidity in the stomach affecting the effects of rosacea from the inside out.

Topical, Active UMF Manuka Honey can be applied directly on the skin like a mask for at least ½ hour to an hour, 2-3 times a day. The moist healing environment provided by the Active UMF Manuka Honey could increase the chances for cure.
